If you put your age as 14 (or anything under 16, i think), your profile is made private automatically, and the only way you can prevent this is by setting your age to something high enough.
Otherwise, there is a setting in the user options. I forget exactly where it is, but I think it's in like... the Privacy Options section or something. Just look around for it in the Account Settings.
